Lejos, muy lejos
Curatorial project that delves into the effects of the 1973 coup d’état on contemporary Chilean art. It was commissioned by the Matucana 100 Cultural Center and presented between September 26 and November 19, 2023.
The exhibition featured works by thirteen Chilean artists living abroad: Johanna Unzueta, Patrick Hamilton, Enrique Ramírez, Paula Baeza Pailamilla, Camila Galaz, María Verónica San Martín, Diego Urbina, Ignacio Gatica, Krasna Vukasovic, Martín La Roche, Celeste Rojas, Pilar Quinteros, and Claudia Gutiérrez.
For the development of the visual concept, a graphic was conceived to represent the distances, their temporalities, and the different ways in which each artist experiences the sense of remoteness, linking these lived experiences to the context of the exhibition. The result was a map of affections and territories that accompanied the show as an interpretive device.
Each work was also reinterpreted and graphically adapted to be integrated into this map, providing greater clarity and a sense of belonging to the whole. In parallel, a series of questions was exchanged with the artists, with the aim of gathering a brief reflection on what it means to live in remoteness, away from their place of origin. These statements, selected through a curatorial process, were incorporated into the exhibition’s narrative, enriching the proposal as a whole.
